CentOS 5/6 guest network receive path fails with Xen 4.1/Fedora 16 Dom0

(XEN) traps.c:3004: GPF (0060): ffff82c480153ed9 -> ffff82c480201488

Solution

This issue seems to be resolved by the patch 'xen/netback: calculate correctly the SKB slots'.  Patch the linux-3.4.4-5.fc17 source RPM and generate a new kernel RPM.

Note: The patch appears to be in kernel 3.5rc7, but not kernel 3.4.6.

Issue

This is a capture of my notes trying to problem solve an issue.

Symptoms

  1. Dom0 and DomU keep running with no error messages
  2. Network packets from DomU through Dom0 keep being forwarded
  3. Network packets going through Dom0 to DomU never reach DomU
  4. The console and disk I/O are fully operational

Executing the following command (as per this list item) causes the same or similar problem:

$ ping -s 3991 -c 128 <hostname>

The host seem to last about 16 pings before network connectivity is lost.

Environment

  • all 64bit
  • Fedora 16
    • xen-4.1.2-7
    • 3.4.2-1.fc16.x86_64
  • AMD Opteron 2000 CPU
  • NVidia MCP55 chipset
  • Network
    • nVidia forcedeth ethernet
    • 9k frames
    • ipv4 and ipv6
    • bond interface (LACP), with VLANs
    • bridge (setup with Fedora network scripts)

Failed approaches

  • Upgrade to the latest code (xen, dom0 & domU)
  • Enable logging
  • Upgrade BIOS
  • disable offload support in domU
  • leave a ping running to keep the network 'hot'
  • Disable IOMMU
  • Generate traffic from the inside and/or outside
  • remove and then re-add the VIF interface to the bridge in domU
  • enable irqbalance in dom0
  • disable irqbalance in domU
  • enable irqbalance in domU
  • add serial port to Xen host to capture additional information (over and above xl/xm dmesg output)
  • using 'xl' to network-detach and then network-attach a new VIF (but 'xm' was ok)
  • reinstall the VM from CentOS 5 to CentOS 6 and hope it doesn't happen as often
  • post to xen users list
  • reinstall Dom0 with Fedora 17 (xen-4.1.2-20.fc17, kernel-3.4.4-3.fc17)

Best workaround(s)

  • Restart the VM
  • Use 'xm  network-detach' and 'xm network-attach' when the fault occurs

Restarting the VM is easy to do manually by logging in via the console, and then issuing a command to reboot. Using 'xl' to detach the VIF network interface didn't work, so the legacy 'xm' command was used successfully.

ToDo/Future

  • Xen 4.2 (not released yet)

Issues

3 issues have been identified:

  1. receive path packet loss on Centos 5/6 VM's (two CentOS 5 VM are the main issue, one is a Nginx reverse proxy and the other is a Samba server)
  2. 'GPF 60' from unidentifed domains(s)
  3. 'Domain attempted WRMSR' from CentOS 6.x domains

GPF 60

No idea what this is, or which virtual machine(s) are generating it.

Domain Attempted WRMSR

This seems to be a known issue that can't be seen in Bugzilla 477647. This thread indicates it relates to "performance monitoring MSRs".

Only non-freed SKB is queued into tx_queue

Posted to xen-devel and netdev mailing list.

After SKB is queued into tx_queue, it will be freed if request_gop is NULL.
However, no dequeue action is called in this situation, it is likely that
tx_queue constains freed SKB. This patch should fix this issue, and it is
based on 3.5.0-rc4+.

This issue is found through code inspection, no bug is seen with it currently.
I run netperf test for several hours, and no network regression was found.
